Sport Pilot Training - What to Expect

Basic Eligibility

Age

  • Must be at least 17 years old to obtain a sport pilot certificate.

  • You can begin training earlier and solo a glider or balloon at age 16 if that’s the category you’re pursuing.

Language

  • Must be able to read, speak, write, and understand English. If a medical condition limits English ability, the FAA may place limits on the certificate for safety.

Medical (Fitness) Requirement

  • A traditional FAA medical certificate (third class) is not required.

  • You can use a valid U.S. driver’s license as evidence of medical eligibility provided you:

    • Have never had an FAA medical denied, revoked, or suspended, and

    • Do not know of any disqualifying medical condition that would make you unsafe to operate an aircraft.

Aeronautical Knowledge & Training

You must receive and log training (or complete home study where permitted) in topics including, but not limited to:

  • Applicable FAA regulations

  • Weather, navigation, charts, and communications

  • Safe operation and collision avoidance

  • Performance and emergency procedures

Flight Proficiency Training

You must receive and log flight training with an authorized instructor in the areas of operation appropriate to the aircraft category you’re pursuing (airplane, glider, powered parachute, weight-shift, etc.).

✈️ Minimum Aeronautical Experience (for an Airplane Single-Engine Land)

According to the FAA regulations you must receive at least:

📌 20 hours flight time, including:

  • 15 hours of flight training with an authorized instructor

  • 5 hours of solo flight training

  • At least:

    • 2 hours cross-country flight training,

    • 10 takeoffs and landings to a full stop,

    • One solo cross-country flight of at least 75 nautical miles total distance with two full-stop landings (one leg ≥25 NM)

  • Recent training toward the practical test within the preceding 2 calendar months.

📝 Tests You Must Pass

  1. Knowledge (Written) Test

    • Must pass the FAA sport pilot knowledge test.

    • Requires a logbook endorsement from an instructor certifying you are prepared.

  1. Practical Flight Test

  • Must pass a practical (flight) test with an FAA examiner or designated pilot examiner.

  • Also requires an instructor endorsement certifying readiness.

  • You will apply for the certificate via the FAA’s IACRA system.

  • You’ll need endorsements, proof of training, test results, and your identification.
