Private Pilot Training - What to Expect
1️⃣ Basic Eligibility
Before or during training, you must be eligible:
Age:
Solo: 16 years old
Private Pilot Certificate: 17 years old
Language: Read, speak, write, and understand English
Citizenship / TSA:
U.S. citizens: proof of citizenship
Non-U.S. citizens: TSA approval before training
Medical:
3rd-Class FAA Medical Certificate (or BasicMed if eligible)
2️⃣ Ground Training (Knowledge)
You must receive and log ground instruction covering:
Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)
Airspace & airport operations
Weather theory & interpretation
Aerodynamics & flight controls
Aircraft systems & performance
Weight & balance
Navigation (pilotage, dead reckoning, GPS)
Human factors & ADM (Aeronautical Decision Making)
FAA Knowledge (Written) Exam
60 multiple-choice questions
Passing score: 70%
Usually taken before the checkride
Endorsed by an instructor to take it

3️⃣ Flight Training (Minimum FAA Requirements)
Total Flight Time
40 hours minimum (Part 61)
Real-world average: 55–75 hours
Dual Instruction (with instructor)
20 hours minimum, including:
3 hours cross-country
3 hours night flying, including:
One night cross-country (100 NM total)
10 night takeoffs & landings
3 hours instrument training
3 hours test prep within 2 calendar months of checkride
Solo Flight Time
10 hours minimum, including:
5 hours solo cross-country
One solo cross-country ≥150 NM, with:
Full-stop landings at 3 airports
One leg ≥50 NM
3 solo takeoffs and landings at a towered airport
4️⃣ Solo Endorsements (Major Milestones)
Before you can solo, your instructor must endorse you for:
Pre-solo aeronautical knowledge test
Pre-solo flight proficiency
Solo flight (renewed every 90 days)
Solo cross-country operations
Specific airport endorsements (towered, Class B if applicable)
